Join Claire from The Stitch Saloon in this six-session workshop series that will take you through the steps of making a Ramona Quilt by Penelope Handmade, from start to finish. A perfect class if you have never ventured into the fun of quilting before, or if you just need a little refresh or some new sewing buddies, it will be perfect for you too!

Dates: Fortnightly on Tuesday evenings, starting 16th April 2024. The workshop dates are as follows:

16th April 2024

30th April 2024

14th May 2024

28th May 2024

11th June 2024

25th June 2024

Time: Each session will run from 7:00pm to approximately 9:30pm.

Location: The Stitch Saloon - 567 Magill Road, Magill SA 5072

Costs: The fee for the series is $210. This includes a purchased copy of the pattern for you to keep as well as tea/coffee and a light supper for each session. You will also be able to use our cutting (rotary cutters, cutting mats and rulers) and ironing supplies however you are also welcome to bring your own if they are small enough to just use next to your machine!

Please contact us before booking if you would like to pay in instalments.

Fabric Requirements: Please note no fabric is included in the workshop fee. We will send you the fabric requirements and other supplies list shortly after booking.

You are more than welcome to bring fabric that you already have at home in your stash, otherwise most of the supplies needed are available for purchase from the shop, and a special workshop discount will apply for any supplies needed from the shop! The cost of a quilt can vary greatly depending on the fabrics chosen, however as a general guide, a quilt made using our fabrics might be around $200. Please feel free to send us an email if you'd like any more information on the supplies!

What to bring to each class:

  • Fabric (you will only need to bring the fabrics for the quilt top for the first few sessions - i.e. fat quarters and background). If you would like to purchase the supplies from the shop, please order online or come and see us during our opening hours before the first workshop as we will be getting straight into pressing and cutting! You will receive a copy of the fabric requirements soon after booking.
  • Sewing supplies - pins, sewing machine needles, seam ripper, scissors/snips, sewing machine thread
  • Sewing machine and accessories. We highly recommend a "quarter inch" foot (included in the basic accessories for some machines but is sometimes an extra purchase) for accurate seams and a "walking foot" if you plan to do straight-line machine quilting. Both are not imperative but very useful!
  • Optional - cutting and ironing supplies that can fit next to your machine, i.e. small cutting mat for trimming (alternatively, you can put your machine underneath the table while you do your cutting if you'd like to bring your own larger cutting mat) or a mini iron/wool pressing mat

Things to note:

You are encouraged to bring your own sewing machine to the classes. If you would prefer to borrow a sewing machine for each session, please contact us at time of booking and we will do our best to arrange this.

There will be "homework" (of the best kind!) between each fortnightly session. Each session will take you through the how-to of each step of the quilt pattern and the quilt process in general, after which the remainder of the session will be student-led/self-paced. Everyone works through the steps of making a quilt at a different pace, but the estimated amount of time to allow for the homework between sessions would be around 3-4 hours.

Lesson Plan:

We will be following the below schedule through the workshop series, however this may change slightly depending on the pace and how the class is working through their quilts.

We have planned the lessons and homework so that you will have a finished quilt to enjoy at the end of the workshop series. This is assuming you will be doing some simple machine quilting as opposed to hand quilting or having your quilt professionally quilted, both of which might take a little bit longer than the lesson schedule allows. If this is the case, we will provide a small sample block for you to still learn the basics of machine quilting and binding so that you can carry these skills to finish your Ramona quilt at your own pace.

Lesson 1:

  • The basics of a quilt and how it's sewn together
  • How to read a quilt pattern
  • Pressing our fabrics
  • Cutting our fabrics

Lesson 2:

  • Sewing half square triangles using the 8-at-a-time method
  • Trimming half square triangles

Lesson 3:

  • Constructing the quilt blocks
  • Deciding on the design layout

Lesson 4:

  • Assembling the quilt top
  • Preparing your quilt backing
  • Basting your quilt sandwich

Lesson 5:

  • Methods of quilting
  • Quilting your quilt

Lesson 6:

  • Squaring up your quilt sandwich
  • Cutting and preparing binding
  • Attaching and hand-sewing binding

We are so excited to have you make a quilt with us! Please let us know if you have any questions about the workshop and we'll do our best to help you.
